Elizabeth Bathory, nickname the Blood Countess, is one of the most famous of all historical vampires. Elizabeth is born into one of the oldest and wealthiest families in Transylvania. Age 15, Elizabeth married Count Ferenc and moved into the counts castle. In 1604 her husband died in battle and thus began Elizabeth’s period of atrocities. She has been labeled the most prolific female serial killer in history.( Royalty )

By this time it is thought that she had dabbled into black magic, attending rituals that included the sacrificing of horses and other animals. Elizabeth, now 40 years old feared the thought of aging and losing her beauty. One day a servant girl accidentally pulled her hair while combing it. Elizabeth slapped the girl’s hand so hard she drew blood. The girl’s blood fell into Elizabeth’s hand and she immediately thought that her skin took on the freshness of her young maid. She believed that she had found the secret of eternal youth. Elizabeth had her servant strip the maid and then cut her and drained her blood into a huge vat. Elizabeth bathed and drank the blood to beautify her entire body.

Between 1602 and 1604, after rumors of Elizabeth’s atrocities had spread through the kingdom. In 1610, King Matthias II assigned two people, to investigate; they collected testimony from more than 300 witnesses.

According to all testimony, Elizabeth’s initial victims were the adolescent daughters of local peasants, many of whom were lured to the castle by offers of well-paid work. The atrocities described included severe beatings, burning or mutilation of hands, biting the flesh off the faces, arms and other body parts, freezing or starving to death.

In 1610 the authorities arrested Elizabeth and four of her servants, who were accused of being her accomplices. The authorities reportedly found one girl dead and some lock up.
Elizabeth was sentenced to life imprisonment in her chamber and stonemasons were brought to wall up the windows and doors leaving the Elizabeth inside. They left a small hole through which food could be passed. She remained there for four years, until her death.

All records of Elizabeth were sealed for more than a century, and her name was forbidden to be spoken in Hungarian society.
