Researchers have discovered that blocking a protein called LRRK2 in mice can prevent the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The hunt is now on for better and safer compounds that can inhibit the enzyme in humans and serve as therapeutic drugs for people with the debilitating neurodegenerative disease. The research was published 22 August 2010 in the journal Nature Medicine
